the difference?
6. What difference does the presence of the Holy Spirit make in your
life? Can you tell a difference in the way you act when you are close
to God, as opposed to when you are not close to God?

Icebreaker:
We've just celebrated Easter. What is one thing you learned or
experienced for the first time?

1. Read 1 Peter 2:4-12. What does it mean to say that Jesus is THE
Living Stone" and we are also "living stones"?
2. What sort of sacrifices do we offer to God? (v. 5)
3. In v. 9 Peter says that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood
a holy nation, a people belonging to God. What are the implications of
each of these phrases?
4. In the Old Testament, it was the priests who offered sacrifices and
interceded for the sins of the people. If we are all priests in God's
holy nation, how do we apply this to our own life and ministry?
5. What does it mean to intercede for other people?
6. How can we "declare the praises" of God in everyday life?
7. What are the moral implications of all of this (v.11, 12)?
8. There are two parts to this priestly way of life: we minister to God
and we live "holy" lives. How can we as a group help each other live up
to this high calling?

1. Which miracle of Jesus is the most incredible/ awesome to you?
2. As Christians we are supposed to follow Jesus... what are some of
the things in Jesus' life which we are supposed to follow?
3. Each person take one of the following passages and ask:
a. What need was here?
b. What did Jesus do?
c. How did he do it?
d. What can we learn from this about how we should minister to
others?
The passages are: Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 1:40-42, Luke 8:49-56, Luke
13:10-13,Luke 17:11-19.
4. Why did Jesus do these miracles?
5. Have you ever experienced a powerful answer to prayer like these
miracles?
6. What are the keys for us in seeking to be like Jesus?
7. Can we do these things by ourselves? What do we need?
8. Think of some people you know who need the power of Jesus in their
lives. How can you help them to know Jesus? How do you think you might
be able to pray with these people?

What is the Bible verse which you first remember hearing? What made
this so vivid to you?

determines all the others?
2. Why do people need salvation?
3. What sort of places or things do they look for salvation in?

5. If Jesus came into the world to save people and not condemn them,

6. What are some things that make it hard for you to accept God's love?

Pray for one another to have the strength to reach out to others.
Plan a "love-in". Think about one thing the group can do that is
practical and will enable someone outside the group to receive God's
love in a tangible way.

Offer prayer for those who need to receive the Baptism in the Holy
Spirit.
Mention that effective witnessing can only happen as we allow the Holy
Spirit to direct us. Spend some time praying to be led to witness by
the Holy Spirit.

gift?
2. In the CEV it says the rich people tossed their money into the
offering box. What does this suggest about their attitude to giving?
3. In the sermon, Pastor Keith said that Jesus taught more about money
than any other subject, including heaven. Why did Jesus do this?
4. Why do you think God commands us to give tithes and offerings?
5. What do you find hardest about giving tithes?
6. Malachi 3:8-12 talks about tithes. What does tithing do for us?
7. In all the issues about how we honour God with our money, which one
is the most important to you now? What do you need to change in your
attitudes or your actions?

Testament uses to describe the church? (Body, temple, priesthood,
family, household, army). What idea does each picture convey? (eg body
stresses unity-- we're all different but we all belong together)
2. Which of these do you relate to the best? Why?
3. Read Acts 2:43-47. What do you think the emotional atmosphere was
like in the early church?
4. What were the important activities in the church?
5. In v. 46 it says they met in the temple and in homes. Why do we need
both the bigger meeting and the smaller meeting?
6. This passage describes the church as a close-knit family that hung
out together. Do you think that's the way church should be? What do we
need to change to make our church more like this?

Imagine you had unlimited sporting talent. What sporting team would you
want to be invited to play for? Why?

1. Read Acts 2:1-5, 40-47. In this passage Luke emphasises the "all-
together" nature of faith. What are some of the features of the church
which he refers to here?
2. If you were there in 30 AD Jerusalem, what parts of church life
would you enjoy? What parts might you find hard to cope with?
3. In the sermon last week, Margaret used the analogy of a team to
describe the church. How do you relate to this idea?
4. Why do you think some believers today choose not to play in the team?
5. Every successful team uses its players to best effect. What gifts
and abilities do you have which might be used on God's team? Are they
being used for God? Why/ why not?
6. One of the benefits of the team playing together in Acts 2 is that
3000 people were added to the church in one day. How do you think the
21st century church compares? Would you be surprised to learn that
world-wide 3000 people are saved every half-hour? Why do you think
christians in Australia seem to be ineffective?

4. We all know that it is important to read the Bible every day. What
sorts of things make it hard for you to do this?
5. How could you be helped to be more devoted to reading Scripture?
6. What is the hardest thing for you in actually doing what God shows

Ultimately the purpose of the Bible is to bring people into a deeper

1. What special responsibilities do we have to each other as members of
the Church?
2. Read John 13:34-35. What is Jesus' commandment to us?
3. What do you think he means by the word "love" here?
4. Read Romans 12. In this chapter Paul gives a list of commandments
which build on the command of Jesus to love one another. As a group,
make a list of the commandments. Are there any which you don't
understand? Are there any which surprise you?
5. Which of these commands do you think you are doing OK at? Why?

7. Which ones do the group as a whole need to work on?

issues that led to the sin?

5. In the sermon, Keith talked about the 3 Gs... girls/ guys, gold and
glory. Which of these is the biggest issue for you?
6. How do you handle the different temptations that come your way?
7. Can you give an example of a time when you successfully overcame
temptation? What was a key factor in your victory?
7. Read 1 Corinthians 10:13, James 4:7-10. What do these verses tell us
about defeating temptation?

up for Jesus. Who is someone that you could be sharing your faith with?

1. Read Romans 6:19-23. What does it mean to say "The wages of sin is
death"?
2. Why does sin result in death? What sort of death?
3. Can you give some examples from your own life of the destructive
power of sin?
4. What would you say to someone who says that something is OK as long
as nobody gets hurt?
5. In the sermon/ video on Sunday, we heard about God judging cultures
for the sin of cultures. What would be some things about Australian
culture that God might want to judge?
6. In Romans 6:23 the "wages of sin" is contrasted with the "gift of
God." Why is God's gift better than sin's wages?
7. How can we help people understand this concept of sin leading to
punishment?

Can you recall a time when you were well and truly lost? How did you
feel? What did you have to do to get to where you needed to be?

1. What does the word repentance mean to you? What feelings do you
associate with the word?
2. Read Acts 3:17-21. Why does Peter associate repentance and
refreshing? How does repentance lead to times of refreshing?
3. How have you experienced "times of refreshing from the Lord"?
4. On Sunday, Keith talked about a three-fold repentance. Can you
recall what they are? (Hint: this matches the three-fold nature of God)
Son-- repenting of sin and turning to righteousness
Spirit- baptism in the Holy Spirit-- repenting of our self-ability
and learning to depend on God.
Father- repenting of our individualism and learning to live as sons
rather than servants for an inheritance rather than a wage.
5. Of these three forms of repentance, which one are you struggling
with right now?
6. Pray for the gift of repentance for each person in the group.

"family"? How could we improve this?
5. Do you think your cell group works well as a "family" within the New
Life church family? What needs to change?
Pray for people who do not yet belong to the family of God.

If you could pick any man in the world to be your father, who would it
be? Why? Why didn't you choose him in reality? :-)

1. Read Genesis 21:1-21. Why was there a problem between Abraham and
Sarah and Hagar?
2. How do you think Ishmael felt when kicked out of home? Do you think
he might have carried this rejection through life?
3. Given that Ishmael was the ancestor of the Arabic people, do you
think this rejection has affected world history in any way?
4. Most people don't get kicked out of home physically. Yet many people
remain alienated from their fathers. What are some factors that might
lead to this?
5. The term "orphan spirit" has been used to describe this alienation
from fathers. What are some signs of this in people's lives?
6. Do you think God is able to restore people to their fathers. What
does it take?
7. Does anyone in the group relate to this? If so, pray for them.
Witness
The biggest single problem in our society is the orphan spirit as it is
played out in independence, rebelliousness, drivenness, difficulty in
sustaining relationships. Pray for people you know who might need
healing for this.

What is the most extravagant or expensive item you ever bought, wither
for yourself or someone else?

1. Read Numbers 13:1-14:10. What picture do you get from this about the
Promised Land?
2. Why were the people so negative about the land?
3. What was it about their thinking that made it hard to believe that
they could possess the land or even farm it?
4. In what ways do christians remain in captivity to this spirit of
poverty?
5. Do you think there needs to be a balance between a realistic approach
to money, and dreaming big dreams? At what point does realism become a
poverty spirit?
6. Have you experienced God as Jehovah-Jireh- The Lord is our Provider?
7. What do you think about the idea that god is El-Shaddai-- "the God of
more than enough"?
8. What dream or ambitions do you have for serving God? What would be
the things that might prevent you from getting there? Can you trust God
to provide what is needed?

One of the barriers to people receiving God is that they think that they
aren't good enough for God. This is a part of the poverty spirit. Pray
for our friends to be able to receive God's amazing grace.

forgiveness of you?

stages or types of heaven which exist at different times. Can you
remember what they were? Was this new to you?
3. What do you think of the idea that in heaven we will have bodies?
4. What would be the main difference between heaven and our present
life?
5. What questions do you have about heaven? As a group see if you can
find out what the Bible says about these questions?

One of the great tragedies which we don't really comprehend is that
many of the people we know will not be in heaven because they have not
asked Jesus into their lives. Spend some time praying for these people.

3. If you could do any job in the world, on the basis of simply enjoying
it and being good at it, what job would you pick? Why? Do you think this
job will be available on the hew earth?
4. How do you think that the christian doctrine of heaven, new earth etc.
should affect our living now?
5. If you REALLY believed this stuff in your heart, what difference would
it make?
6. Why do you think that preaching on this topic is untrendy?

Heaven is not all "good news." The Bible teaches that there will be many
people who will not be there. What can you do this week to help some of
your friends choose heaven?
